We're thrilled to announce a special Art Contest open to all students in Fenton Area Public Schools, grades Y5 through 12.

To celebrate the arrival of the new Fenton ladder truck, three lucky student artists will be selected to participate in the ceremonial “Push-In”—a firehouse tradition that dates back to the days when horse-drawn wagons had to be physically pushed back into the station. It’s a rare and meaningful experience, and the winners will also get to be among the first to ride in the bucket of the new truck!

The cards were shuffled, the chips were stacked, and the stakes were high at this year’s Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament! On an unforgettable night of competition and camaraderie, over 200 attendees, including 116 skilled players, gathered to test their luck and strategy—all for a great cause.

In a dramatic finale, they decided to deal one last hand face up to determine the champion. In a moment that seemed destined by fate, both players were dealt the exact same hand! With an undeniable feeling that it was meant to be, Billy and Chris agreed to split the pot and were officially named Co-Champions of the tournament.

The 2024 Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament was a resounding success, thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors and the enthusiastic participation of nearly 200 players. Together, we raised an impressive $13,000+ to support teacher grants that directly benefit the classrooms of our kids. Thank you for going all-in for our schools! Your participation has made a real difference, and we can't wait to deal you in again next year on March 6th, 2025!

It was an emotionally-charged night as this tournament was played with heavy hearts as Jeremy spent the day of the tournament at the hospital with his lifelong friend, Beau Curtis, who was on life support and sadly passed away on Saturday, March 9th. He is survived by his wife Kristie and their two young children, Declan and Silvie. On March 10th Beau was transferred to Ann Arbor to begin the Gift of Life. Beau will help eight different people continue to live and possibly another 80 improve their quality of life.

Jeremy will be renaming Leroy Street in Beau's honor, and has graciously chosen to donate his $1,700 in prize money directly to Beau's family.

The Fenton Education Foundation will host its 11th annual Black Tie Awards Dinner on Sept. 10 at The Laundry in Fenton.

This year’s honorees include long-time successful businessman and community activist, Richard Canever, president owner of Vic Canever Chevrolet in Fenton. Canever will be receiving The State Bank Community Contribution to Education Award.

Through Canever’s leadership, generosity as a business owner and community activist, hundreds of students have benefited through the Southern Lakes Parks & Recreation’s driver training program.

Vic Canever Chevrolet has donated the cars used for this program for more than 10 years, thus allowing the program to continue. Canever has also been supportive of numerous athletic programs through his corporative sponsorship of numerous teams and events.

According to Patricia Lockwood, chair of the Fenton Education Foundation, “Richard was the unanimous choice of the Foundation board. Through his leadership and community commitment, students of all ages have had opportunities to learn and excel in their career paths. We look forward to honoring Richard at The Black Tie event on Sept. 10 at The Laundry.”

The second award recipient, George Kralosky, will be receiving the Nancy and Edward Petruska Life Time Achievement in Education Award.

Kralosky was an English teacher at Fenton High School for 19 years. He was a popular teacher with his students and dedicated significant time as an IBO Diploma Program teacher. In addition to his work inside the classroom, Kralosky was also a driver education instructor, a co-sponsor for the National Honor Society, and coordinator of the Project Close-Up program.

The Lifetime Achievement in Education Award was established by way of a gift from the Petruska family to the Fenton Education Foundation. The award recognizes the contribution that educators make to the community. Edward and Nancy Petruska devoted a combined 52 years of educational services to the Fenton Area Public Schools.

Mark Suchowski, principal at Fenton High School, said, “George joined the English Department at Fenton High School in August of 1994 and for the next 19 years made a huge impact on the lives of his students and colleagues. He was masterful at inspiring those he taught to develop their own voice, think critically, and express themselves clearly. George also collaborated with his fellow teachers throughout the building and inspired them to examine and improve their teaching.”

The 82 attendees of the ninth annual Black Tie Event, which supports the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foundation (FAPSEF), were once again generous with their financial assistance and supportive of those being recognized for their contribution to Fenton Area Public Schools.

The event was held at The Laundry on Sept. 12.

Over the years, this event, after expenses, has contributed more than $260,000 to FAPSEF, which was established by a grant from The State Bank. According to Joe Kryza, chair of the FAPSEF board of directors, the Black Tie Event would not be possible without the generosity of The Laundry.

The evening’s highlights included Pat Lockwood, FAPSEF co-chair, making a special presentation of The State Bank Community Service Award, which was awarded to Fenton Police Chief Rick Aro and Fenton Fire Chief Robert Cairnduff. Lockwood was joined by former Fenton City manager, Mike Senyko, who hired both chiefs.

Linda Mora, Early Childhood director for Fenton Area Public Schools awarded the Petruska Lifetime Achievement in Education Award to Trudy Iverson.

Following the specially made dinner, a live auction was held and more than $16,000 was raised in just 10 minutes. Spirited bidding to be able to create and name a sandwich at The Laundry for a year was won by Gail and John Strayer, who had the winning bid of $3,800.

Jocelyn and Phil Haggerman had the winning bid for a private pie baking experience with Mark Hamel, owner of The Laundry. Their prize includes wine and cheese for eight. Other auction prizes included golf at Oakland Hills, donated by the Petruska family and won by Julie and Brent Straffon. In addition, Brent and Jennifer Williams had the winning bid for a framed and autographed “Get out of jail free card.”

A $10,000 donation was made to establish a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fund by Mark and Jamie Dunkel.

Leaving their mark on the evening were Fenton schools administrators who served as valet attendants and the Fenton Art Department, which designed the award plaques.

Next year’s Black Tie Event is set for Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014.

Jim was someone who not only his students and athletes respected and looked up to, but his colleagues, parents, and community members did as well.”

Joe Kryza, FEF chairman, said Fleck is a “great example of an active community leader and has been instrumental in creating collaboration between students, teachers and community members. The wonderful Fenton Community Orchestra, a true achievement for Fenton, has flourished and is a great example of her dedication and passion.”

Andy Perkins, Fenton Band instructor, said, “Jennifer is a tireless worker, dedicated to extremely high standards. She always thinks of the students, schools and the community as the beneficiaries of her efforts and has organized trips and performances for the public, bringing in individuals from local assisted living facilities, our schools and beyond.”

Fleck lives in Fenton with her husband, Greg, and their three sons.

Like many people, the number seven is Joshua Paletta’s lucky number. The Fenton father of five was this year’s winner of the Col. Fenton Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament at the Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille.

This year’s 11th annual event was sponsored by the Fenton Education Foundation (FEF). Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit Fenton Area Public Schools in the areas of arts, academics and athletics.

Although the event took place in March, Paletta’s road sign finally became a reality this summer. He chose “Paletta 7 Pkwy,” which will ceremonially appear on sections of LeRoy Street for approximately one year.

Paletta said the “7” symbolizes the number of people in his family — Dad, Mom and five kids.

In addition to the ceremonial street sign, Paletta won $1,000 in cash and a bracelet from Medawar Jewelers, which sponsored the event with the Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille.

“The bracelet can be categorized as unisex,” he said. “It has a plate that can be engraved.”

FEF Board President Mike Senyko said, “We’ve really enjoyed the event every year and are really proud to host it at the Fenton Hotel.

“Its success is a direct reflection on the nature of our community — everyone gives,” he added. “The money we raise from this event goes directly back to our teachers to help offset district costs. This year we raised about $5,000. And we are already looking forward to next year’s event.”

According to Fenton history, in the mid-1800s, founding fathers Col. William Fenton and Robert LeRoy played a poker game. The winner would have the town named after him. The loser would have the main street in town named after him, and other streets in town named after his family members. Obviously, Fenton won the card game.

Fenton — A full house of queens and aces. I wish I could say this was my hand but sadly, it belonged to the young lady across the table from me. With a smile and a quick giggle, she swooped up all of my chips and I was out of the Colonel Fenton’s Founder’s Day Poker Tournament a mere 45 minutes after the first hand was dealt.

So goes the game of poker. Your chip stack can be an empire that dwarfs everyone else’s and one hand later, you’re left with ruins. That’s what I love about poker, it’s a game where anything can happen. Skill, luck, egos and the draw of the cards are all factors when it comes to winning. I’ve seen seasoned card players get blown out by first-time players, unassuming little old ladies run tables and drunks, who couldn’t hold their cards straight, clean out sober players.

I consider myself a decent, if not competent player. But in the three years I’ve played in the tournament, I haven’t been able to make it past the first table. The game requires a different mindset since rounds are timed to an hour-and-a-half each. A time restriction eliminates the luxury of waiting out a string of bad hands and urged me to bet more frequently. Playing poker can be a humbling experience as I didn’t expect the woman sitting across from me to knock me out (and coincidently, one of those little old ladies beat everyone at our table).

Despite all this, I always have fun playing in the tournament. I have found that the tournament, like all good things in life, is more about the people involved rather than the actual game. The Fenton Hotel quickly fills up after the first round, the losers sharing war stories of hands they should have won with and the people who made it to the next round.

The game is all for a good cause, which lessens the sting when you lose. The proceeds from the tournament benefit the Fenton schools for education, athletics and the arts. That’s more rewarding than the $1,000, getting a street named after you and getting to brag you’re the best poker player in town. Right? Well, that’s my story until I win the tournament next year.

Jay Greenwald won the tournament, according to Tom Bertschy, vice president of Commercial Banking for The State Bank and board member of the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foundation. He added that Greenwald made a great humanitarian gesture by allowing the runner-up to name the street after her niece (Isabella Ward) who is battling for her life with cancer.

Bertschy will have more details about proceeds by early next week.

Not only will he receive a custom bracelet from Medewar Jewelers and $1,000 in cash, he will also be given the honor of having a portion of LeRoy Street renamed to their name for a full year. Pitts chose to keep the road name in memory of Bella Ward.

Poker enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting a moment when they can sit down at a table in the Fenton Hotel and try their luck at a thrilling game of poker. Organizers are equally excited as they look at this annual event as a big fundraiser for the Fenton Education Foundation (FEF).

Dating back to 2005 when former Fenton City Manager Mike Senyko was instrumental in establishing a charitable poker game that would benefit the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foundation (now called FEF), of which he was a member, this fun, adult event has raised thousands of dollars for the school district.

Those who “know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em,” still have time to buy in to the annual Col. Fenton Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament at the Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille.

This year’s 11th annual event will be Thursday, March 3. It is sponsored by the Fenton Education Foundation. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit Fenton Area Public Schools in the areas of arts, academics and athletics.

According to Fenton history, in the mid-1800s, founding fathers Col. William Fenton and Robert LeRoy played a poker game. The winner would have the town named after him. The loser would have the main street in town named after him, and other streets in town named after his family members. Obviously, Fenton won the card game.

Doors open at 5 p.m., check-in is at 6 p.m. and play begins at 6:30 p.m. Buy-in is $100, which includes the cost of one player, one spectator and free hors d’oeuvres until 10 p.m. A cash bar will be available.

Spectators not accompanying a card player are encouraged to attend for $20 at the door, which includes a free hors d’oeuvres bar.

Following the card game, a section of LeRoy Street will be ceremonially renamed in the winner’s honor for approximately one year.

First-round winners will receive $100, second-round winners will receive $150 more ($250 total), plus dinner for two at The Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille.

The final table winner will receive $750 more ($1,000 total), plus have a section of LeRoy Street named in their honor.

Fenton — Rarely do politicians, school staff and community members gather to gamble and drink on a week night for a good cause.

This was the case last Thursday at the 2013 Colonel Fenton’s Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament held at The Fenton Hotel. It raised funds for the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foundation (FAPSEF).

The restaurant was closed down to the public for the annual tournament, which is the primary fundraiser for FAPSEF, said tournament chairperson Tom Bertschy. “It’s a great event for the community, this really helps support our funding of grants for schools,” he said, which grants around $10,000 each year to Fenton Area Public Schools (FAPS).

The tournament drew 98 players, along with spectators. Players paid $100 to sit, and it included the entry fee for one spectator. Players, spectators and volunteers enjoyed a cash bar, and “heavy hors d’oeuvres.”

It was clear before play began, that players and spectators were there to have fun. The atmosphere was warm and upbeat before participants were directed to their tables. They shook hands before the first card was dealt, and things got a little more serious as play began. In the main dining area the ‘clack’ of dropping chips replaced conversation as the dominant sound.

“It’s always such a fun event,” said Fenton City Councilwoman Pat Lockwood, who is also on the FAPSEF committee.

As the first round ended around 7 p.m., the first few players out of the game still left with smiles.

The first-round winners took home $100, the second-round winners $150, and the final winner takes $750, for a total cash winning of $1,000. They also can unofficially name LeRoy Street for one year. The 2013 winner is Charles Marshall.

Last year’s winner was Fenton Township Trustee Rob Kesler, who named LeRoy Street, Kesler Avenue.

Some lucky poker player will have bragging rights when a street in downtown Fenton is named after them for an entire year. They will also win $1,000 while supporting the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foundation (FAPSEF).

FAPSEF hosts this event to raise funds for the school district’s teachers and students in the fields of arts, academics and athletics.

If this sounds like a worthwhile evening of entertainment, you will want to register to play in the 2014 Colonel Fenton’s Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament. The event takes place Thursday, April 24 at the Fenton Hotel. It will have the same format as last year.

The expected 100 participants’ entry fee is $100, which includes one spectator admission. Spectators without a player will pay $10 cover charge, which includes food and appetizers. A cash bar is available.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for registration and dining. The first round starts at 6:30 p.m.

The grand prize is $1,000, dinner for four at the Fenton Hotel and a “World Series of Poker” themed bracelet donated by Medawar Jewelers. Organizer Jeff Irvin said two years ago, Medawar owner Ronny Medawar attended the event as a spectator and wanted to offer a bracelet as a prize for the winner similar to the poker events on TV.

This poker tournament is run by a group of at more than 20 volunteers either associated with the school district or members of FAPSEF. Irvin said everyone at the Foundation is grateful for Nick Sorise and his staff at the Fenton Hotel for putting on the event every year.

Planning of this year’s event was more complicated because charity events such as this are now overseen by the Michigan Gaming Board, the same government unit responsible for the casinos in Michigan. Licenses were approved and organizers are finalizing preparations for another big event.

The event will be stylized after the original poker game held in 1875, when legend has it that William Fenton won the poker game, supposedly seven-card stud, and the town was given his name. Robert LeRoy lost, and had the main street named after him.

If you enjoy an evening of playing poker and would also love to win as much as $1,000 and have a street named in your honor for a year, you won’t want to miss the 2013 Colonel Fenton’s Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament.

This annual event, now in its eighth year, benefits the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foundation (FAPSEF), which raises funds for its teachers and students in the fields of arts, academics and athletics.

For people unfamiliar with Fenton’s history, in the mid-1800s, Col. William Fenton and Robert LeRoy played poker to name the town and main street. Fenton won the card game.

FAPSEF members will be hosting the tournament at The Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille, honoring the historic event, scheduled for Thursday, March 7.

Doors open at 5 p.m., check-in is at 6 p.m. and play begins at 6:30 p.m. Buy-in is $100, which includes the cost of one player, one spectator and free hors d’oeuvres until 9 p.m. A cash bar will be available.

Following the card game, LeRoy Street will be ceremonially renamed in the winner’s honor for approximately one year. First-round winners will receive $100, second-round winners will receive $150 more ($250 total), plus dinner for two at The Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille. The final table winner will receive $750 more ($1,000 total), plus have LeRoy Street named in their honor.

Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend, with a $10 cover charge. Tickets are now on sale. They can be obtained from any foundation board member, at the Fenton schools’ administrative office, or The Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille. Student musicians will benefit greatly from the generosity of the Archbold family, who earlier this year established the Robert “Bob” Archbold Memorial Fund and Scholarship for Fenton High School.

The family, the Fenton Education Foundation (FEF) and Fenton High School band have created a $50,000 multi-year fund that will enable the Fenton band, under the direction of Andrew Perkins, to provide an annual scholarship, contribute to the marching band’s uniform efforts and help provide funding for individual band members and events.

This memorial fund was created to remember Bob Archbold, Fenton High School Class of 1985, who passed away from heart-related complications in 2015. He was only 48 years old.

“Bob absolutely loved the band and music his entire life,” said his brother, Roger Archbold, senior strategic alliance manager for Microsoft. ”We miss Bob and hope that this fund will help out students who share Bob’s passion and love for music.”

Pat Lockwood, of the FEF Board of Directors said, “The Fenton Education Foundation is grateful to Roger Archbold and Microsoft for this generous donation to benefit Fenton’s Band Program.

“Over the next 10 years, students will have the opportunity to continue their musical education through this scholarship and additional contribution to the overall needs of this successful program,” said Lockwood. “Our sincere thank you to the Archbold family, who acknowledge the importance of music in the overall growth of our students.”

Perkins said, “Roger and the Archbold family have been incredibly generous to the FHS Band Program. I was overwhelmed with the way they are choosing to honor their brother by supporting the program that was so important to Bob.

“Our purpose in the band program is to create positive life-changing experiences for the students, and Roger and the family really seemed to embrace that vision,” Perkins added. “Their donations and support help in a tremendous way, and we’re honored that they are choosing to remember their brother in this way.”

    Who was Bob Archbold?

The Archbold family moved to Fenton in 1964.

“My father got a production job at the recently opened General Motors (GM) Truck and Bus plant on Bristol Road,” said Bob’s brother, Roger. “At that time there were five children — Joleen, Mona, Kendra, Richard and myself. Bob and (twin sister) Barb would not join the family until 1966.

“Initially we moved into a house two doors down from (Tomek) Eastern Elementary; then we moved to Fifth Street and finally to South Holly Road where we spent most of our lives.

“Dad worked production so money was short back in those days at GM … my dad would be laid off for a couple of months in the summer.”

The Archbold parents always made ends meet, but it was a struggle for them raising a large family on a limited income, said Roger.

“Bob often would look back on his childhood growing up in a small community like Fenton, and what it was like being a part of a large family,” said his sister, Mona (Archbold) Knapp.

Roger said, “In retrospect growing up in Fenton during those days was almost idyllic — but you did not realize it at the time. Bikes were the main mode of transportation, newspapers or WJR (radio) were the way you received your information and a long distance call was important.”

Mona said, “Bob’s first ‘real’ job was at the Southside (Johnny Greer’s) grocery store in Dibbleville.

“Our parents taught us all to not take money but do things out of the goodness of your heart,” she said. “That was something Bob did throughout his life, helped others out of the goodness of his heart.

“Everyone in the neighborhood looked out for each other,” said Mona.

Mona said her brother enjoyed being with people of all ages, but had a big soft heart for kids. Throughout his life, Bob was encouraging kids to be the best they could be.

Music was always playing in the Archbold house, either on the radio or on the record player. Doing plays and practicing their acting skills was another activity, according to Mona.

“Bob liked that one. He could be a bit of a ham,” she added.

“Growing up as a family we were pretty close,” said Roger. “There was a large field behind our house so we would play family ball games, go fishing in the millpond, and in the winter we would ice skate on the pond or go sledding in the hills across the street.

“Bob was an active kid and always seemed to be in some sort of harmless trouble. Mom would get calls from the neighbors asking if Bob had been outside playing, because they came home and found the hose was running and had flooded their yard, or the flowers had been pulled out — or weeded as Bob would claim.”

Roger said Bob’s fourth-grade teacher got him involved in music and drums.

“Bob played all the way through high school and played in the Jazz ensemble at Central Michigan University. As he got older and his health began to deteriorate he would still pick up pencils and drum on the table or counter top.

In offering condolences upon learning of his passing, one post stood out that clearly described Bob, said Mona. “In life you run across a few people that you’re glad you met, you were honored for them to take time for your own struggles, it made you better that your paths crossed, and in passing, they left all that with you forever.”

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” This quote, from Benjamin Franklin, is a needed reminder of how we must approach teaching and learning each and every day.

We are eager to begin the school year in Fenton Area Public Schools and to provide opportunities for all of our students to be involved. Whether it is through athletics, marching band, theater, the robotics team, or being a part of something within the community, we encourage all of our students to get involved.

Creating a true culture of learning means our students feel they play a key part in their own learning and take ownership in applying what they have

learned in the classroom to making a difference within the local and global community.

Fenton is truly a great place to live, work and learn because of our families and community members.

We are excited to begin this school year with our exceptional staff, including new staff hired over the summer, and the same positive attitudes that will meet you at the door each day.

Whether our students are entering their last and final year at Fenton High School, or coming to their first day of kindergarten, we want our students to be involved, embrace learning, and find their creative abilities.

Fenton Area Public Schools will be going through the strategic planning process this year and we are excited to have our community involved as we strive for a better and brighter future.

To be involved means to be engaged. I would like to challenge all of us to take the words of Benjamin Franklin and put them into action. Thank you for your support as we again start another year of learning at Fenton Area Public Schools.

Where did you grow up and go to school?

I grew up in Fenton and graduated from Fenton High School in 2000.

Where did you go to college?

I went to Michigan State University for my undergraduate degree in Communications, Central Michigan University for a graduate degree in Administration and then to Michigan State University for my Executive MBA.

What do you do for a living now?

I work in the insurance industry at MetLife. My primary role is as a consultant working with employers and their broker to offer benefits to their employees.

Tell us about your high school wrestling career.

I was lucky enough to be part of the Fenton wrestling program and was surrounded with great coaches and fellow wrestlers. As a team, we had some really great experiences and I was fortunate enough to have placed four times at the state tournament of which two of them was as a State Champion.

      Did you wrestle in college?

Yes, I wrestled at Michigan State University. It was a great experience; some of my teammates are still some of my closest friends.

As president-elect for the Fenton Education Foundation Board of Directors, what do you hope to help achieve on behalf of Fenton Area Public Schools students in the coming year/years?

I look to continue to build upon the great work that the foundation has accomplished over the last 10 years, in particular aligning with the needs of the students and teachers while expanding the student educational experience.

Throughout the school year, student and teacher needs arise and I envision that the Fenton Education Foundation (FEF) will continue to be there to help fulfill those needs. Our financial support toward academics, arts and athletics is the direct result of the community support that we have here in Fenton, which has been outstanding. The Board of Directors is a group of passionate individuals and it is exciting to see this passion be channeled to support our students and their interests.

What do you like to do in your spare time (hobbies, travels, etc.)?

Embarrassed to say I don’t have a ton of hobbies, but I have found myself to be pretty busy over the last year. Recently my wife and I purchased a commercial property in downtown Fenton, which has been great to feel closely connected to the community.

My daughter has been pretty active in sports so coaching has become a new found enjoyment and my son seems to defy normal laws of energy so I seem to be enjoying a lot of outdoor activities with him.

My wife and I like going out on “date night” in downtown Fenton, so any chance we get we are out enjoying the restaurants in the area.

What’s a typical Friday night like for you?

Right now, they are pretty low key. By the end of the week, the Pushman household is tired so a bite out to dinner is always a family favorite with the hopes of an early bedtime for the kids. Otherwise, Friday nights spent with family and friends is atop the list.

What don’t most people know about you?

I read the last chapter of a book before I decide to read it; I know that is the wrong way to go about it, but it works for me.

He chose not to run for re-election in 2011, as reported in a Tri-County Times article dated April 22, 2011. “I’ve been on the board since 1992,” said Walker. “It’s time to let someone else step up and take the position.”

I’ve been married to Steffan Schaffer since September of 2015. My son Andrew Premo, 15, is a sophomore at Fenton High School and my daughter, Katie Premo, 13, is a seventh-grader at AGS Middle School. My stepson, Cameron Schaffer, 14, is a freshman at Lake Fenton High School. We have a dog, a 12-year-old lab mix named Coco, and two cats named Ruger and Bailey. They are both 2 years old.

I was born in Mt. Pleasant, but my family moved to Fenton before I started school. I graduated from Fenton High School in 1992. I received my bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Michigan-Flint, and my MBA in Human Resources Management from Baker College.

What is your position with The State Bank?

I am a senior vice president at The State Bank with responsibilities of directing our Human Resources and Marketing function. I work from our Main Office in downtown Fenton.

How long have you been with The State Bank?

I started at The State Bank on June 20, 1994. When I started with the bank, I was a part-time teller at our Holly Branch on Grange Hall Road. Over the years, I have held the following positions: senior teller, community office supervisor, branch manager, retail banking officer, payroll/benefits administrator, retail banking department head, human resources generalist. I have been in my current role as a senior vice president and director of Human Resources/Marketing for the last 13 years.

What do you like best about your job?

I love working with people. Being in Human Resources allows for so many opportunities to interact with people from recruitment to employee development. It is so fulfilling to see someone grow and experience success in their career and know that you played a small part in supporting them. I also love working in the community that I live. The bank does so much with our local communities and it is awesome to be a part of that as part of my work responsibilities. It has allowed me to get involved with so many great organizations like Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce, Fenton Education Foundation, United Way of Genesee County and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

What are some of the challenges?

Certainly not all parts of Human Resources are glamorous. There are often difficult decisions that need to be made that directly impact your people. That is certainly the most challenging aspect of the job. I have tried to always balance the business needs of the bank with the well-being of our staff and make decisions accordingly.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to read and spend time with my family. We enjoy going on vacation and have spent a fair amount of time going on cruises. I enjoy going on wine tours and try to do that at least once a year in the Traverse City area. My sons both play baseball and my daughter is a volleyball player so I spend a good deal of free time at their sporting events as well.

What is something people don’t know about you?

As a senior in high school, I wanted a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, which is a small pig that can be a pet. They are the size of a small dog. I found one through an ad in the paper. My mom and I went to go pick it up and I had read the ad wrong. It was a pot-bellied pig — like a huge farm pig. In typical teenage rebellion — I said that I wanted the pig still and for some reason — my mom allowed it. The pig took up the entire back seat of our Chevette. Unfortunately, the pig died on the way home because it was very worked up about getting in the car and apparently had a heart attack. We lived in downtown Fenton at the time and I had no idea what we were going to do with this farm pig in downtown. My dad, who knew nothing about this plan, came home from work to a dead pig in the middle of our garage.
