Like many people, the number seven is Joshua Paletta’s lucky number. The Fenton father of five was this year’s winner of the Col. Fenton Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament at the Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille.

 This year’s 11th annual event was sponsored by the Fenton Education Foundation (FEF). Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit Fenton Area Public Schools in the areas of arts, academics and athletics.

 Although the event took place in March, Paletta’s road sign finally became a reality this summer. He chose “Paletta 7 Pkwy,” which will ceremonially appear on sections of LeRoy Street for approximately one year.

 Paletta said the “7” symbolizes the number of people in his family — Dad, Mom and five kids.

 In addition to the ceremonial street sign, Paletta won $1,000 in cash and a bracelet from Medawar Jewelers, which sponsored the event with the Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille.

 “The bracelet can be categorized as unisex,” he said. “It has a plate that can be engraved.”

 FEF Board President Mike Senyko said, “We’ve really enjoyed the event every year and are really proud to host it at the Fenton Hotel.

 “Its success is a direct reflection on the nature of our community — everyone gives,” he added. “The money we raise from this event goes directly back to our teachers to help offset district costs. This year we raised about $5,000. And we are already looking forward to next year’s event.” 

 According to Fenton history, in the mid-1800s, founding fathers Col. William Fenton and Robert LeRoy played a poker game. The winner would have the town named after him. The loser would have the main street in town named after him, and other streets in town named after his family members. Obviously, Fenton won the card game.
